Portofino is the line of classic dress watches from the Swiss manufacture IWC Schaffhausen. The first Portofino appeared in 1984. According to the story told by the brand itself, the then head watchmaker Kurt Klaus and the brand's chief designer sketched it over a glass of wine: they wanted a simple, elegant watch in the spirit of the round models of the 1950s and 60s. The line is named after the Italian resort town of Portofino.
The line is recognised by its minimalist round case, with Roman numerals and simple hour markers on the dial. Case materials include stainless steel and 18-carat 5N gold. Within the series, the choice is made first of all by movement: the Portofino Automatic is self-winding, the Portofino Chronograph adds a chronograph, and the Hand-Wound models are wound by hand. A separate branch covers watches with moon phase and calendars.
