A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus Chronograph: Technical Precision in Steel
Introduced as a major technical expansion of the Glashütte manufacture's sporty Odysseus collection, the Odysseus Chronograph presents an innovative approach to elapsed-time measurement. By integrating central chronograph hands into the established day-date dial structure, A. Lange & Söhne preserves the signature visual balance of the line while introducing high-level mechanical utility.
Evolution of the Odysseus Line
When A. Lange & Söhne launched the Odysseus collection, it introduced the brand's first series-produced model line engineered with a water-resistant stainless steel case. Designed to combine traditional Saxon horological finishing with elevated structural durability, the collection expanded significantly with the introduction of its first self-winding chronograph.
Rather than employing traditional sub-dials for elapsed hours and minutes at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions, the Glashütte watchmakers developed a central counter architecture. This structural decision preserves the large day and date displays that define the identity of the Odysseus dial layout.

Case Architecture and Dual-Function Controls
The case of the Odysseus Chronograph is crafted from stainless steel, measuring 42.5 mm in diameter with a total thickness of 14.2 mm. Its surfaces display fine satin brushing complemented by hand-polished bevels along the flanks and lugs. Rated to a water resistance of 120 metres, the case is fitted with a screw-down crown and specially shaped pushers positioned at 2 and 4 o'clock.
These pushers incorporate a dual-function control mechanism. When the crown is screwed down into its operating position, the pushers act strictly as chronograph controls for starting, stopping, and resetting. When the crown is pulled out to its adjustment position, the same pushers serve as rapid correctors for the outsize date at 3 o'clock and the day-of-week display at 9 o'clock.

Central Chronograph Display and Dial Geometry
The dial is finished in a deep black shade with distinct surface textures. The central sector features a matte graining, while the surrounding hour ring and sub-dial utilize fine circular grooving. Hour markers are applique indices crafted from white gold, filled with luminous material to ensure high contrast in low-light environments.
Elapsed time is indicated by two central hands: a red hand for elapsed seconds and a rhodium-plated hand with a lozenge counterweight for elapsed minutes up to 60. Running seconds are located on the sub-dial at 6 o'clock. This layout maintains absolute visual symmetry, leaving the large day-of-week aperture at 9 o'clock and the outsize date at 3 o'clock fully legible at all times.
Internal Engineering: Calibre L156.1 DATOMATIC
Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback is the in-house self-winding calibre L156.1 DATOMATIC. Operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), the movement features a skeletonized central rotor with a platinum centrifugal mass to ensure efficient winding. The movement provides a power reserve of 50 hours when fully wound.
The calibre L156.1 DATOMATIC incorporates a classical column-wheel mechanism coupled with an innovative dynamic reset-to-zero system. When the reset pusher is activated, the central chronograph hands execute a high-speed return trajectory calculated relative to the elapsed minute count. Following Glashütte tradition, the mainplates and bridges are fashioned from untreated German silver, decorated with Glashütte ribbing, and paired with a hand-engraved balance cock.
Wrist Comfort and Integrated Bracelet
Despite its multi-layered mechanical system, the 42.5 mm stainless steel case is engineered for balanced wrist distribution. The integrated stainless steel bracelet incorporates alternating brushed and polished five-piece links that follow the contours of the wrist seamlessly.
The safety folding clasp features an integrated micro-adjustment system, allowing the wearer to adjust the total length by up to 7 mm in small increments without releasing the main locking mechanism.
Position Within Modern Glashütte Horology
The Odysseus Chronograph stands as a distinctive expression of modern German watchmaking. It merges high functional capability with uncompromising hand craftsmanship, offering a central-counter chronograph mechanism housed within a durable, water-resistant exterior.
Created for collectors who prioritize mechanical innovation and clean layout symmetry, the watch highlights the manufacture's ability to rethink classic complications within contemporary design parameters.
